There’s a significant chance I’m way, way off or everyone figured this out a long time ago, but

At the beginning of the movie, Metro Man is addressing the crowd and he says, “The greatest honor you’ve given me is letting me serve you, the helpless people of Metro City. And at the end of every day, I often ask myself, who would I be without you?”

He’s trying to tell them. He’s hinting at what’s been going on in his head. It goes right through them, but if you look closely at his eyes, you can see the sadness. He’s admitting he’s looking for his own life beyond the title the population has given him of “hero.” He wants to know who he’d be without them.

And I want to hug the poor guy.

{{ all of this. This is my head canon and the reason I wrote A Different Perspective. }}
