Destined for – what?

I’m not active in the Megamind fandom so I’m not sure how many tears have already been shed over this but here it is for everyone to lament:

There is a very sad difference between one of the trailers and the movie itself.

In the trailer, when Megamind’s parents put him and Minion in the escape pod, his father tells him, “You are destined for greatness.” Megamind’s narration comments, “That was a lot of pressure to place on an eight-day-old.”

BUT,

In the actual movie, his father says, “You are destined for -” and then the escape pod seals. “I didn’t quite hear that last part. Destined for … what?” And then he spends basically the whole movie trying to figure out what his destiny is supposed to be.

Megamind’s ongoing existential crisis aside, here’s why I find that change super-sad.

We, those of the audience who have seen that trailer, know the entirety of Megamind’s parents’ last words to him.

Megamind, canonically, does not.

…ouch.
