Starlight Picnic

He squeezed her hand, “Yeah, it was special, but it was more… well…,” a mischevious smile spread on Syx’s face as he saw they’d reached the top. He singsonged, “You’ll see.”

He pushed through the last of the low hanging branches. Before them, the sand dunes dipped down low, the lake beyond that. They were high in the air here, the lights of the city a distant dream. The huge lake seemed to disappear into the horizon, the dark water glittering as the sun sank low.

Just in time.

The sky was alight with warm golds and reds as the sun seemed to sink into the dark water. His voice soft, Syx continued, “When I was here… I could forget about humans and the pain they caused. Here, by this lake, under these stars… Under a red sky… waiting until the stars fill the entire sky…”

The sky was nearly cloudless, as the sun’s light sank away, the glittered. So much brighter, so many more than could ever be seen in the city.

“It was as close as I could ever get to…” his throat closed up as his eyes were drawn up. Not that he could see that star from here. It could be seen from Earth, but not from anywhere in Michigan.

He shook his head to clear his thoughts and squeezed his beloved’s hands again, “Anna? My Tiger? I… I wanted to…” his stomach tightened with nerves, “…ask you something?”

Anna found herself laughing at the mischievous expression on her mate’s face, unable to help herself when he was acting as he was. He was always so amazing in everything he did, the thought a genuine one as she looked to him rather than to what he was revealing. Or at least, this was true at first. Looking forward as they pushed through into the clearing, Anna found her breath taken away by the beauty before them, pale eyes that held a subtle glow widening as she took it all in.

She felt a deep rooted sense of peace here, as if she could lay here and never be bothered to truly move. As if the woes of the world and her own mind could never touch her as they stood together hand in hand… it was truly perfect in her mind. The colors of the darkening sky were all taken in with vivid clarity, able to see why Syx would love such a place with ease. She had fallen in love with the place on the first look… so it made perfect sense to her, anyways.

It was the scent of his rising nerves that prompted the shifter to turn and look at him, blinking once before her head tilted to the side just enough to notice. The action was more animal like than anything else, showing the rise of her own confusion as she squeezed his hands in return, shifting so that she was facing him now rather than the beautiful view that lay out before them.

“You can ask me anything,” she urged, her voice a bit quieter. Though even if it was quiet, the sincerity certainly still rang through.

Syx laughed, his insides fluttering, “Right… Right,” he took a deep breath and squeezed her fingers, “Anna, we haven’t known each other long but I can’t imagine my life without you. When everything felt like it was falling apart you were always there to hold me together. We’re lost and broken… But together we’re better. And I… Anna,” he swallowed, biting his lips against the overwhelming swell of emotions in his chest, “Will you-”

“-fuck! I’m doing it wrong! Wait, wait!” Letting go of her hands he scrambled through the pack he’d brought. Pulling out a blue cube, he looked around for a water source before just cursing silently and spitting on it. A small velvet box, barely larger than the cube had been, appeared.

Dropping to one knee like he always saw in the movies, Syx held up the box and opened it. The ring inside was pure black and set with a shining dark diamond, “Anna, will you be my Evil Queen?”
