Personal Investigation

Roxanne had gotten used to having both compliments and insults hurled at her over her looks during her time as a reporter. She’d gotten used to letting both just slide off of her for the most part. The only opinions she took seriously were those of Wayne, Minion, and Megamind. She found herself accepting Harrison’s compliments at face value and thus she wasn’t sure how to react. Half between humble, embarrassed, and still in shock.

“Mate? That’s an odd way to put it,” he’d said earlier that there was a Megamind that was married to a Roxanne. Now it was more than just a thought. A what if. Her Megamind was attracted to her. The way Harrison spoke of it made it sound like, “Megamind and Roxanne are a common couple?” her voice had a distant quality, she felt disconnected as her brain fought to process and analyze every kidnapping through this new light. Face drawn, she denied her dark fantasies, “Well it’s not like I would ever date a villain. He has to know he doesn’t have a chance.”

All that he’d believed for so long that she’d been dating Wayne. All the better that he was having a thing with Wayne now. It was… better this way. Even if she’d lost both of them from the looks of it so far.

Harrison shrugged.  “Mate, partner, spouse.  Husband, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend.  The labels don’t matter as much as the feeling behind them.  That person who is your person.  The one you would do anything for, the one you would miss like hell if they went away, the one who helps you create a life that has meaning.  Call that whatever you like.”

He shifts slightly in his seat, watching her features darken as she considers and rejects whomever the Megamind is in her world.  So he wants to choose his next words very carefully.  He doesn’t want to give her the wrong impression with all his gossip about doubles.

“I don’t know about you and your Megamind, but the pattern I’ve seen between Megaminds and Roxannes since coming here isn’t that they are necessarily a couple.  Some dated and broke up, some got married, some never thought of dating to begin with.  The common thread is a connection based on mutual affection and respect as much as rope burn.  What you weave with those threads of connection is your business.  Its what makes each of use unique no matter how many dimensional doubles we have running around.”  He reached out and patted her lightly on the leg in a way that she would hopefully find reassuring.

“Oh,” Roxanne hadn’t really ever questioned the labels before. She’d grown up with girlfriend and boyfriend, husband and wife. It was a struggle to remember to think outside of that sometimes. She did try, though, “That makes sense, I just haven’t heard that in the context of a person before, just animals.”

“Respect…” Roxanne echoed, looking down at the blue hand on her knee. She sighed, did she respect Megamind? Not his villainy… but his genius? the man that she saw glimpses of occasionally when the act slipped? That man she did respect. She admired his tenacity and his creativity. She’d never realized that he might think highly of her as well. He respected her privacy and took care to maintain their strange working relationship… but that it might be more than professional courtesy… suddenly she wasn’t sure how to feel. Especially considering that her Megamind might not even be around anymore.

Keeping her muddled thoughts to herself, she instead marveled, “You know… I’ve never actually seen Megamind’s hands before. Not this close, anyway. The only time I’ve ever seen him without his gloves was years ago when I interviewed him in prison,” she bit her lip at the memory, he was so different there. He’d hardly seemed like the man she knew. It had been the only time she’d ever actually been scared of him, seeing him bound to a chair with straps, snarling at the guards with a murderous expression she’d never seen on him before. Letting out a breath, Roxanne refocused, “Your nails are lovely.”
